During the recording of the band's fifth album, the band loses their manager and are faced with financial difficulties. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. The lead vocalist Fergie Frederiksen is let go and replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is a more natural frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much-needed boost.
In 1999, the band releases Mindfields and embarks on an extensive tour across the globe. After several weeks in Europe, the band heads to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes recording and goes on to record their first live album titled Absolutely Live in 1993 which includes the cover of Weezer's track Hash Pipe in response to the band covering their hit Africa on their recent tour. Toto's touring lineup is completed by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.
